There are many different Barbies on the market so it can be a bit of a challenge to choose one for your girl. Remember when all we had to do was choose either a Barbie with black hair or blonde hair. Times really have changed as there are not all kinds of Limited Edition, seasonal and other types of Barbies on the market.

When choosing a Barbie choose one that is age-appropriate. Some Barbies have arms and hands that can come off and be a choking hazard. There are special Barbies manufactured by Mattel for younger types.

There is also now a Barbie made for every child’s interest or hobby. Does your kid like sewing, caring for animals, horses, aerobics and sports. Whatever your child’s passion or interest is there is a Barbie to match it.

It’s also pretty easy to buy the same Barbie twice. Check out which Barbies that your kid owns already. Interesting choices are occupational Barbies or ethnic Barbies. Sometimes your little girl will just tell you what Barbie is on her “need it” list.

You can get a Barbie at just about any price nowadays. There are tons of sites online where you can get them used and new. Pick a price range that suits you and find a doll to match it. I have seen genuine Barbies being sold for as low as three bucks on auction and discount sites on the Internet.

A big no no is to get your kid a fake Barbie. I tried that once and I never heard the end of it. The doll has to be real. Make sure the doll is packaged in its favorite pink signature Barbie box as well.
If your little girl is not too old you should avoid a Barbie that comes with lots of clothes and accessories as everything will just get lost. I can’t tell you how many of those little pink shoes I found stuck in the vacuum cleaner.

If your child is older you can teach her to sew by making clothes for Barbies. There are some sewing patterns on the market that allow you to make an outfit for Barbie and one for you or your daughter that matches perfectly.

Not all Barbies are ten inches high. Some of them are actually the size of a toddler. These are called My Size Barbie and they can trade clothes with a four your old. The value of this is to teach the toddler how to get dressed.

I must admit I am a little shocked by a photo I ran across lately. It was of little Suri Cruise, who is only three years old, strutting around in little white high heels.
Granted what she was wearing was a very classy and cute pair of heals. They were kind of high however. The heel looked to be almost two inches. The construction of the shoe was T-strap style but still I had to ask myself a couple of questions. Is this fashion for toddlers thing going too far? What is the deal with high heels on little people who have yet to grow bones? Could it actually stunt their growth.
The other disturbing thing is how sexual these shoes look on such a young child. It seems though that celebrity children can never be too young to be sexualized.
It seems that Disney is in on the act. My little girl talks all the time about how she wants some high heel Princess shoes. These are plastic clackers with big sequins and feathers on them that have a heel. I think they are a bit slippery and dangerous to walk in because the soles of them are smooth plastic. They are also cut a little sharply so with a very young girl I would be scared she cut her foot.
This is part of a larger trend towards sexualizing little girls and although I am not altogether for it I am not against it either because I do think that it helps girls develop their sexuality. However you are also seeing little girls turned into sex objects. Even their tiny glittery tops are low cut and a bit provocative. It makes you wonder if the design minds behind these kiddie fashion creations have ever heard of child molesters. Some of the fluffier dresses remind me of Jon Benet Ramsey wear.
I think Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes should know better. They must know as parents that what their little girl wears influences thousands of parents. People imitate the way celebrities dress. For the record I don’t do anything that a celebrity does. I really do believe that a little kid should not be in high heels at the age of three. Maybe it is okay at age five if the kid has to wear those special tap dancing shoes that have a bit of kitten heel. Other than that it is not necessary.
Of course I am just assuming that it was her parents who chose these shoes for her. It could be that the child insisted on wearing them. However in my house I am the boss and the child does not tell me what she is going to wear during the day.

What is a little girl without a bow in her hair? The simplest hairdo is simply done by gathering some hair at the top of her head and using a clip or ponytail holder to secure it. Then to get really fancy I simply clip a big beautiful bow over this. Sometimes I put something more interesting in her hair like a big flower! This makes her look very cute. I try to put something in her hair that will match her dress. As she grows older I will probably put smaller bows in her hair so that she looks more dainty.
The pony tails is absolutely classic. It looks best if you gather all your girl’s hair and brush it until smooth. It also keeps her neat looking for school.
You can also change the look of a ponytail by changing the part. A center part is classic but a side part can look very elegant as well. If you really want to jazz up a ponytail have your little girl wear a decorative band as well. You can get “kits” in drug and dollar stores that feature both the bands and matching bows in one package.
As a rule of thumb the shorter the hair the higher the pony tail has to be. Very long hair makes a nice low pony tail. This style is easy to maintain as well.
You can take a ponytail and make an easy French twist simply by taking the hanging hair and twisting it. You will need to use another ponytail holder and secure the second portion of her hair. Repeat the step above till this second section is flipped through the second gap. Loop some more sections. Secure it with a band at the end of the section.
A pony tail is also easily turned into a bun. This works great for long hair. Brush her hair neatly and gather it on top of her head. Use the band to secure it around the bun. You can even let some hair stick out of the bun to have a casual look.
Remember to use some cool accessories for little girls such as little brets or additional elastics as this will make most ponytails look even more uniuqe. This would also help to keep the hair in place. Remember to keep it simple, as most little girls would prefer to be comfortable throughout the day and you don’t want them distracted by maintaining their hair at school.
Always avoid the use of hot curling irons that may harm the gentle hair. If you want to give hair a little bounce use steam rollers or rag twist curlers made out of fabric instead.

My little girl loves wearing perfume but I would prefer she wear something less expensive than my Chanel No. 5. When a kid gets hold of an aerosol they have no idea how to conserve it. They just keep squirting perfume on themselves until the bottle is empty. Thank God there are children’s perfumes out there that are cheap and that come in giant bottles to satisfy their youthful gluttony for scent.
Children’s perfumes as a general rule are non-toxic and irritant free. This makes them appealing to parents who worry about their child (or a younger sibling) ingesting perfume or makeup, or having an adverse reaction to it. However, some kids still do experience allergies from kid perfumes.

It is not so much asthma that is a problem. It is rashes on sensitive skin. If you do not want your kid to have a reaction do not buy kiddie perfume products with geraniol, eugenol and hydroxycitronellal.
One very safe product is made by Mattel. It is called Barbie Princes Perfume and is a very demure mix of flowers, wood and mandarin notes. It is described as a very “girly” scent. It comes with a bonus Barbie watch too.

Those two adorable twins Mary Kate and Ashley have been marketing perfume for tykes for years. They also make makeup for little girls including an eyeliner!

Warner Brothers created a perfume for the Powerpuff Girls. Named after one of the main characters, Buttercup is a combination of vanilla, musk and mint. You can also get scents named after the other two characters – Bubbles and Blossom.

For boys there is a scent called Superman! This is a neutral eau de toilette spray fragrance that comes with a bonus watch with the superhero’s image on it. A lot of these scents seem to come with watches. It is as if the manufacturers want you to smell good as well as teach your kids how to tell time.

Believe it or not Mickey Mouse is a unisex fragrance for kids although it is marketed for boys. It comes as a seven ounce spray. It has a strong citrus scent that really makes your kid smell like he was eating a lot of tangerines. It is packed in a metallic lunchbox that can be taken to school.

The great thing about these fragrances is that they are not that expensive. Most of them clock in at under twelve dollars in terms of cost.
