Every wonder how all of those movie stars lose their post pregnancy paunch so fast? It’s probably not through diet and exercise. It’s probably because she got a tummy tuck.

It is unrealistic to think that you can lose the belly you get after birth immediately. It usually takes months of exercise for your body to recover after labor.  However if you are impatient you can get a tummy tuck, just like a celebrity would. Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck is an operation that costs between $4,000 and $6,000 and can help reduce the appearance of loose, sagging and flabby skin around the abdomen. The doctor removes flesh and fat and tightens stomach muscles.  Most plastic surgery magazines say that technically you should not even consider this operation after a pregnancy unless you are absolutely certain that your stomach muscles are not responding to diet and exercise.

Most people however see getting a tummy tuck as a replacement for diet and exercise after getting pregnant. This isn’t “right” but it does save time.  However don’t think about getting one if you are planning to gain weight, lose a lot of weight or become pregnant again in the future. One pregnancy will simply counteract all of the effects of the operating.  Depending on how much flesh and fat is going to be removed a tummy tuck can be performed as either an outpatient or inpatient procedure. It can be done with a sedative and local anesthetic but most people refer to be under general anesthesia as it is bloody.  The surgeon will m make one long cut from one hipbone to another. A second incision is then made to remove the navel skin from the abdominal wall. The skin is then clipped; repositions and the abdominal muscles are pulled tighter and stitched together.  After the skin is stretched over the abdomen a new opening is cut out of the flesh for the belly button and it is stitched.

If you do think that a tummy tuck is the answer to a post baby belly bulge then you need to have realistic expectations. This is a serious medical procedure that will leave a big scar on your stomach.  You should also know that recover from this operation cane uncomfortable as there can be swelling that can last from a few weeks to a few months. Sometimes the entire stomach area can feel numb.  Also as is true of many different operations a tummy tuck can have complications such as loss of the belly button, hematoma, excessive bleeding, infection and scarring.Mild exercise like walking reduces inflammation and helps the body heal faster. If you are smoker you might also have a harder time responding to this type of cosmetic surgery. It is also never given to individuals under the age of eighteen. A cosmetic surgeon that agrees to do this operation on an obese minor or smoker  is probably not that great of a doctor.  However if you are a mummy you should probably not be smoking anyway!

Circumcision nowadays is very common. It is definitely a rite of passage for people form many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.  I am not saying in this blog that I am for or against the procedure in any way but I thought it was an interesting subject especially for new parents who are wondering “To circumcise or not to circumcise – that is the question.”

There is only a risk in a circumcision operation if it is poorly carried out.  If the procedure is done badly there can be postoperative bleeding and sometimes an infection from a homemade circumcision can be fatal.  In fact, the American Medical Association says that bleeding and infection are the most common of the complications associated with the procedure even if you do have it done in a hospital. In most cases the bleeding caused by a cirmcision is stopped within minutes of pressure being applied to the cut.

Symptoms of serious complications due to a circumcision include problems with the lymph glands, ulcers around the tip of the baby’s penis, impotence, cysts and loss of the penis due to necrosis.  One side effect that is not evident until your child is much older is pain when the penis is erect. These types of conditions ten to occur when a surgeon or urologist is not the person conducting the operation.

Thankfully there are simple and common procedures that can help correct this situation if it does happen. This is just precautionary talk and for you interest only.

Not that many baby penises are ever lost to a condition like penile necrosis.  The American Academy of physicians says it is two in a million. A study done in Isreal says it’s one in a million.   Circumcision seems to be a very safe procedure in general. The AMA says that complications occur in 2% of cases.  However the American Academy Family of physicians says that as many as 35% of circumcisions cause problems. However the benefits of getting your child circumcised has health benefits that seem to far outweigh the risks. For one thing, the entire pubic are is a cleaner and there is less risk of infection. Men who have circumcisions also don’t tend to suffer from yeast infections like uncircumcised men do.

The World Health Organization published an article in the Library of Science Medicine Journal in July 2006 that stated that men who have been circumcised have a lower risk of contracting and also spreading AIDS. The study then went on to postulate that if all men in the world were circumcised over the next ten years then two million new cases of AIDS could be avoided. Does this mean that we should get our children circumcised to spare millions from suffering?

However as a woman with daughter, I am thinking that an even bigger plague could be prevented if all men were circumcised.  Many studies have shown that men who are uncircumcised men are at greater risk of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, which is transferred to women. Women then develop warts, which lead to cervical cancer. It is estimated that 94% of women in the United States have already contracted this virus thanks to sex with male carriers.

It’s definitely the time of year when you might start to see sun spots. Some people call them age spots, which is silly because they don’t really have much to do with age. They are an autoimmune response to the rays of the sun.  They are also called liver spots or brown spots.  They are caused by hyperpigmentation of the skin.

Do you need age spot lightening cream or “age spot corrector?” This may be dependent on how dark your age spots are. If they just look like freckles they might be attractive and give you a kind of outdoorsy sun-kissed look.  If they are irregularly shaped or very dark  then it might be time to put some kind of correcting cream on it. Usually find them in the sun-exposed areas of your body such as on your face and hands. Extra melanin, (the technical term for the pigment in skin) causes the discoloration. Age spot corrector creams and lotions  target these areas.

However the best solution when it comes to developing sun spots is to practice prevention. To aovid skin discoloration, wear sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight especially between noon and 2 pm when the sun is at its strongest. This way your body will not be triggered to produce the melanin that discolors the skin in the first place.  Prevention is practical in this case as sunscreen is less expensive then the creams that are used to lighten the color of sun spots. Usually a  sun spot lightening cream  contains hydroquinone. This is the most effective of chemicals for bleaching the skin. However it can also caused irritations and scarring.

One of the newer ingredients that is found in sun spot corrector creams and lotions is Kojic Acid. It is made from a rare type of fungi. Although it is slower acting it gentler on the skin that an application of hydroquinione. You will also find alpha-hydroxy acids in a high quality age spot corrector or age spot lightening cream. These acids are derived from milk or fruit that help gently remove your outer skin cells. Alpha-hydroxy acids also remove dead skin cells so that the other ingredients in the cream can penetrate more effectively.

Creams and correctors can actually  make your sun spots worse if you decide to apply them and then go out in the sun. If you are in an active program of using these lotions and creams then you need to make sure that you are making use of sunscreen products at the same time.  This is because the alpha-hydroxy acids traumatize your skin and it may stimulate the immune system to produce more melanin. This can result in darker, more intense pigmentation that can only be removed by expensive dermabrasion or chemical peels that are done in a dermatologist’s office. Keep in mind too that using spot lightening cream and age spot corrector is a temporary fix for these problems. Once you stop using these creams the problem comes back.

However continual use of these products along with a light but effective moisturizer with a high SPF level should help you against the UVB and UVA rays that cause these sometimes unattractive brown spots in the first place.
